Boston Sports

Game 1…Eastern Conference Finals…Bruins vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

You know what this means?

Game food…

Chicken wings, nachos, dips, whatever. If it ain’t good for you, that’s what you eat on big game nights. When you live in New England, they’re all big games. If you’re talking about sports fans, Boston’s fans are among the most devoted, fanatical bunch anywhere, or so I’ve been told.

In New England, we take our sports and our game food seriously. Fenway Park has the famous Fenway frank. Patriots fans arrive at Gillette Stadium hours before the game, no matter the weather, for some amazing tailgate parties. Some with trucks tricked out with grills, smokers and coolers.

They paint their faces, their bellys and I’m sure other parts of their bodies that they aren’t allowed to show on the nightly news. You haven’t seen anything until you see six fat, drunk men all standing up proudly holding their shirts up to display B-R-U-I-N-S at a game. I’m sure there’ll be some of that this evening. Tune in.

As a hockey family, we are dedicated to the game. All you hockey moms know what I’m talking about. The 6:00 a.m. games two hours away, tryouts, practices, scrimmages, Drop Kick Murphys and let’s not forget about the smell. You’ve got to be tough…and carry a lot of Lysol.

There is nothing classy about being a Boston sports fan, and game food is no exception. We’re talking finger-lickin chicken wings, nachos, chips, dips, cupcakes in garish colors displaying team flags. You will be laughed out of (if you’re lucky) a game party if you show up with canapes or tarts. I’ve seen it happen.

So get out your Frialator, plasticware and paper goods and throw on your yellow and black and have a party. Even if you don’t like hockey, jump on the bandwagon. It’s the playoffs!
